Crypto staking: how it works and the risks
In short: Staking means locking cryptos to help secure a network (such as Ethereum) in exchange for a reward. The yield is paid in crypto: if its price falls 50%, a few percent of reward won't make up for it.
Where the yield comes from
Proof-of-stake networks reward those who validate transactions. Part of it comes from creating new tokens, which dilutes other holders.
The risks
A falling price, a lock-up period when you cannot sell, the failure of the platform staking for you, penalties for bad validation.
Beware of big yields
A "guaranteed" yield of 20% or more on a crypto is a warning sign.
