What is an altcoin?
In short: An altcoin is any crypto other than bitcoin: ether, solana, XRP, dogecoin… They are usually more volatile than bitcoin and tend to fall even harder when the crypto market drops.
Why riskier
Less money traded, younger projects, sometimes heavy concentration in a few holders' hands. An altcoin can lose 90% and never recover.
The link with bitcoin
Most altcoins follow bitcoin's big moves, amplified. A 20% bitcoin drop often comes with much bigger falls in altcoins.
"Altcoin season"
People talk about altcoin season when they rise faster than bitcoin. These periods are short and unpredictable.
