What is the Bitcoin halving?
In short: The halving cuts in half the number of new bitcoins created per block, about every four years. The last ones took place in 2012, 2016, 2020 and 2024. It slows the creation of new bitcoins, but its effect on price is not guaranteed.
Why it exists
It is written into bitcoin's code to cap the total at 21 million. Miners receive fewer and fewer new bitcoins.
Effect on price
After each past halving, the price ended up rising in the following months. But four episodes are very few for a rule: the economic context also mattered a lot.
Beware of certainty
If the effect were certain and known in advance, it would already be in the price. Lessons from a few cycles may stop working.
