Growth stocks or value stocks: what's the difference?
In short: Growth stocks belong to companies whose profits grow fast, often with a high price relative to earnings. Value stocks look cheap relative to their earnings. Depending on the period, one style or the other does better.
Growth
Tech, innovative healthcare… A high P/E: you pay today for profits expected tomorrow. If growth disappoints, the price can fall hard.
Value
Banks, energy, established industries. Low prices, often higher dividends. The risk: the low price may be deserved.
The link with interest rates
When rates rise, growth stocks often suffer more.
